Title: Education Governance Politics and Policy under New Labour
My research investigates the political management of English state schooling under the three New Labour governments from 1997-2010.I attempt to explain New Labour education strategy with reference to a broader governing project pursued by the members of the core executive.I also attempt to develop a framework for the evaluation of New Labour's education policies. I argue that New Labour’s education strategy represents a broader constitutional or state project ‘writ small’. This project aims to increase the managerial effectiveness of the core executive by reducing the autonomy of bodies which held significant discretionary power under the classic Westminster Model. My research is relevant to studies of British politics and New Labour, governance and state theory, theories of policy change, public administration and public policy in England.
